Bee kind to Dandelions
Love Your Dandelions! By our feature writer ‘QueenBee’
Now is peak dandelion! The roadside verges are awash with their vibrant yellow flowers and they look wonderful. But they’re considered weeds so any keen gardener would probably shudder at the prospect of dandelions in their lawn or borders and reach for the trowel or the weed killer. Dandelions are a wonderful source of nectar and pollen for bees, so perhaps you might consider allowing them to finish flowering before digging them up! At the weekend I watched my bees flitting from dandelion to dandelion, happily supping up the nectar. Weeds are just wildflowers in the wrong place , and many are great sources of forage for pollinating insects so I’ll make a little plea to leave a small wild patch in our gardens.
